Le Pays Royannais: lots of excursions are of interest on the Côte de Beauté : “les carrelets” (fishermen’s houses) at Saint Palais, Royan with its unique blend of old and modern architecture, the floral park “les jardins du monde”, the troglodyte caves of Meschers, the Romanesque church of Talmont and offshore the majestic Cordouan lighthouse. … The Arvert peninsula with its forest, La Tremblade oyster beds, the paths through the Marais (Marshes), and the pretty village of Mornac are other places to discover. Marennes- Oléron oyster beds, Brouage, the Islands: Oleron, Aix, Ré, not forgetting l’île Madame the smallest as well as all the forts like the well known Fort-Boyard, Rochefort : la Corderie Royale, the drydock for the Hermione, explorer Pierre Loti’s house…. La Rochelle : its massive marina les Minimes, the huge modern aquarium and the maritime centre…… Inland, Saintes and la Saintonge with its Gallo-roman remains, and all the architectural legacy of the Romans, the many magnificent churches, the chateaux…. And of course, slightly further away: the Médoc, Cognac, le Marais Poitevin….. |
